Cobh

We took a day trip to the port city Cobh. It is actually pronounced cove because the bh in Irish makes a v sound. The reason you want to go visit Cobh is because it is the last port where the Titanic docked before she sank. Historically it is also the largest port city in Ireland. Over 2 million immigrants sailed from Cobh to the US. So if you have ancestors from Ireland or the UK chances are they went through Cobh. Plus it is a beautiful idyllic Irish village. We have found out through are travels in the UK as well as Ireland now, that traveling during the Christmas and New Years holidays may not be the best time. A lot of places are closed and do not reopen till a week after the new year. We found that out a lot on this trip. One of the main attractions that we wanted to visit in Cobh is the Titanic Museum. It was closed till January 6th. Oh well, just add it to our list of things to go back and see.

Cobh is only about a twenty or so minute train ride from the Cork City Center. Making it a really easy place to get to. We are public transportation people to the max and took the bus from Carrigaline to Cork and then the train from Cork to Cobh.

Vintage train at the Cork train station.
We are train people. Actually we are just public transportation people.

The statue for all the immigrants who left from Cobh. I am sure I have some ancestors who left from here. Pretty neat to be back to a place where they were.

The picture with Daddy and the memorial is much more fun.

The Cobh Cathedral made our trip out there worth while. It is stunning sitting up on the hill over looking the village.

Beautiful idyllic Cobh village.

The colored buildings! It adds a lot of character to these small Irish villages we have visited.

We found a small park in the village center where Cosette could play. It always makes the trip better when we stop and find something that she is interested in.

We played shop at the play ground. We would give her some coins and "buy" things from her little shop. She mostly sold us ice cream and bottled water. Every time we bought something from her she would say "thank you so much!".

Celebrating the Titanic. It was here.

This is probably one of the most stunning cathedrals that we have visited. It is very majestic sitting a top the till over looking the city. I love it!

This huge ocean liner was coming into the bay to port. As you can see it was enormous!

Made it through to the Cathedral! It was a steep hike up to it. The Irish coast is not at sea level. Its coast line are cliffs and the beach areas are steep sloops down to the waters edge. With that knowledge you can now understand it was a steep climb to get to the Cathedral and well worth it.

Cosette informed us that Baby Jesus had pooped and has since told us at every cathedral with a  manger scene.

Since we have been going into so many churches we have told Cosette to be quiet when we are inside. Now she tells us "in the church we have to be very very quiet". I love her Cosetteism.

Stunning rose window and organ.

Another one our favorite days in Ireland. Thanks for the great time Cobh
