Apple Picking Means It's Officially Fall!

We made a trip up to Barton Orchards last weekend to get in some apple picking! This has become one of our cherished fall traditions. It is the best! We love living in the city but it is so nice to get out and see the beautiful Hudson Valley. This drive was especially beautiful with all the leaves changing color.

This trip almost was an epic disaster. The weather did not want us to go. Saturday called for rain all day. And rain poured it did. We had already gone through all the effort of renting a car, finding car seats, and we were going with friends who wanted to go rain or shine. So with our rain gear in hand we went ahead as planned. We left later in the day and by the time we reached the orchard the rain had stopped! Only a slight mist, nothing we could not handle.

The venture turned out to be a success. It was not very muddy, we did not have to pay the entry fee due to the rain, and we had the whole place pretty much to ourselves. We picked a half bushel of apples, cut some flowers, and picked out a couple of pumpkins. There were apples for mile and miles. Our tummies were very happy.
We found our favorite apples! We pick Mutsu everytime we go this time of year. They are so tasty! Plus, they are great for sauces, baking, and eating. Three for three. Although, this time around they are really tart. I now understand the sour apple candy flavor.
My favorite picture from the trip. Henry enjoyed eating several apples. They are best freshly picked off the tree.
The most interesting pumpkin in the patch. I wish we could have taken it home.
Husband may be working at a desk all day but he is still strong!
There is something about a pumpkin patch that puts a smile on my face. It is just pumpkins in general. They make me really happy. Pumpkins make Cosette happy because every time we see them she wants one. So everytime we go to the grocery store she asks for one and more often than not we leave with one. Where we are going to put them all?
The pumpkin we were going to get until we realized it was going to be thirty plus dollars. It is the perfect pumpkin though. I just wanted to take all the pumpkins home with us.
Cuties eating apples and happy the sun came out. Cosette was really excited to see the sun. She ran up to me and said "Mommy! The sun is awake!" I promise she does not say that because of Frozen. Although, if she did I wouldn't care. I love Frozen.
This is one of my happy places.
She is my sunshine.
My handsome boys.
Awesome picture of the gang.
Cosette and Eugenio pulling out loot on our way. They refused to let anyone help them. It was a slow trek to the car.

We have been eating apples with just about everything and making a ton of different types of apple dishes. I am trying to stay away from our usual dishes so we can try some new recipes, and trying out more savory recipes. A couple of new recipes we have tried are apple caramel cheesecake, and carrot-apple soup. Oh, I love fall!

Post from past apple picking trips here, here, and here.
