Day Trip to Delaware

If you haven't noticed, we like to travel. Now that we are back in the States we are trying to visit States close by and make Lyndon's life goal of visiting every State (and also every country). We have talked about going to Delaware to just go to Delaware. We rented a car and drove down to for a day trip. It's about a three hour drive from the city. Our plans were to check out Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and William Penn landing site.

We spent most of our time at the Wildlife Refuge. There were a lot of little board walk hikes. We saw a lot of birds, ducks, geese, lots of different species of hawks, turkey vultures (so many of them), herons, other water birds. It was really cool to see groups of them fly up into the sky together. We also saw fiddler crabs, a fox meandering down the road (which meant it probably had something wrong with it), and a couple of snakes. Cosette saw the snakes. Poor girl was taking her time and was behind us a little bit on the trail. We heard some screams, and we bolted to where she was. Apparently two snakes had slithered across the trail where she was walking. She kept closer to our group after that.

It was WINDY!

Looking for fiddler crabs.

If you look closely you can see a couple getting ready to fight.

Sticks are their favorite. They are sometimes swords, shovels, and this time fishing rods.

Fox sighting.

Flocks of birds dotted the sky the entire time we were there.

We then drove to the William Penn landing site. It was nestled into this historic colonial town on the Tidal Delaware Water Trail. The town was charming. There is a statue of William Penn erected in the quad. Very usual historic town. It was cool to see a piece of history first hand.

Then we went home. We listened to Ralph S. Mouse by Beverly Cleary. The kids have gotten into books on tape, well I guess now we call them audio books. We listened to it a couple times through. It's nice exploring different kinds of books with them.

The entire time we were in Delaware, we kept seeing signs that said "Delaware, the First State". Doing some Wikipedia research, I found that Delaware has this nickname because it was the first of the 13 colonies to ratify the US Constitution. Thanks Delaware for taking the lead on that one.

We have another state to mark off our list and a day full of wildlife memories. I am pretty sure that Cosette will remember this day more than the rest of us, due to her snake encounter.
