Queens Zoo

We renewed our zoo membership! There was dancing and cheering in the apartment. This zoo pass is the best because it gets us into all the NYC zoos and the aquarium. That is five zoos in total! Before we left we used it a lot and went frequently to the Central Park and Bronx Zoo. We love the zoo.

Back before Lyndon was working the late hours he is now, we ventured out to the Queens Zoo one beautiful Saturday. It was our family's first time and we liked it alot so we will be going back. It was worth the schlepping out there.
The zoo is on the site of the 1964 World's Fair aka Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Caught a pic with the Unisphere which represents our Earth of the "Space Age" and "Man's Achievements on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe".

I really liked this zoo for a couple reasons. First all the animals are native to the Americas. Second, the information about all the animals was really well done. It was not an overwhelming amount that you sosometimeset on little plaques around exhibits, but it was just enough and creatively done so you learned a lot. And the petting zoo was kind of the bomb.
We got there in time for our favorite zoo activity, the Sea Lion feeding! Cosette really likes visit the Sea Lions on all our zoo excursions and Henry was really into them. His little eyes would follow them back and forth and his head would turn everytime he heard them "roar". The NYC zoos breed Sea Lions so all the zoos have them here and their exhibits are some of the coolest.
The Plothow Boys.
His face is so precious in this picture! He is the sweetest little sugar muffin.
Singing "Home on the Range" to the Buffalo.
Skipping along to the next exhibit.
Looking for the Andean Bear.
And we found them!
Looking for ducks and swans.
Our baby birds. The bird exhibit there was kind of amazing. So they have a Hedwig (snowy owl) which makes any zoo the bomb. Those owls are so pretty. And there were Bald Eagles, and a Sandhill Crane, and a bird Aviary. It was the coolest aviary we have ever visited. There were all sorts of tropical birds and the way the exhibit was set up you were right on eye level with them. It was a really neat experience.
We found horses in the Domestic Animal area. Cosette kept asking to ride them. She was really disappointed that she was not able to. There were a bunch of really cool animals over there. They had a bunch of different types of cows including the Highland Cow that we saw while driving through Scotland. And they had the most interesting plaque that told all about the different types of cows. Lyndon is pining for a Jersey Cow, at least some Jersey Cow milk. They supposedly produce the best kind of milk. One day when we get our farm we will fill it with Jersey Cows for Lyndon, and horses for Cosette.
Both kids enjoyed feeding the goats. When we ran out of feed they both would find some on the ground that other people dropped.
And my favorite were the llamas and Alpacas. Such funny creatures, well the Alpacas are. It's teeth were funky in the front. Made me laugh.

With winter creeping upon us, I am glad I have pictures and memories of beautiful sun shinny days like this one. It makes the cold ebb a little bit. Luckily it is not freezing yet. And once it is spring again we will have to make another trip out to this part of Queens. We could have spent the whole day in the park. This city is the best.
